Prof Andrew Goodman PhD

Andrew Goodman has been a barrister since 1978 (Bencher of Inner Temple, 2009) and an accredited CEDR mediator since 1993 practising from 1 Chancery Lane Chambers, London in commercial, construction, partnership, franchising, professional negligence and farming disputes. He has been recommended as a leading junior in professional indemnity work and in ADR in the Legal 500 for 18 years and was for four years listed in Chambers Directory as a leading practitioner is ADR. He is currently Professor of Conflict Management and Dispute Resolution Studies at Rushmore University. He was requested to submit evidence to Lord Woolf’s Committee on Access to Justice on Court Annexed ADR Practices in other jurisdictions, and on mediation practice to Lord Justice Jackson’s review of civil costs. He has been a member of the Bar’s ADR Committee since 2005 and is regarded as a leading international mediation advocacy trainer. He devised the course for and was Director of Accredited Mediator Training for the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, 2007-2010, and led its mediation training until 2012. Andrew is a member of the Independent Standards Commission of the International Mediation Institute and a vice-Chair of its Sub-Committee on Mediation Advocacy Certification. He is a guest lecturer at a number of academic institutions, including BPP University College, Cardiff Law School, MMU, the University of Reading, Southampton University, London Metropolitan University, the University of Law, Birmingham, and a sometime visiting lecturer on the LLM/MA Dispute Resolution courses respectively at UCL and SOAS, London. He has lectured on and provided training in mediation advocacy at the ICC in Paris, and in the UAE, Hong Kong, Turkey, Nepal, Oman, Kuwait, Malaysia, Belgium and Nigeria. He has lectured to members of the Chinese, Dutch, French, Flemish, Nepalese and Croatian judiciaries and been invited to do so in Canada, Ghana and Uganda.

Andrew is a Director of the Association of Mediation Assessors, Trainers and Instructors. He is a trustee of the Centre for Peaceful Solutions.

Andrew is the author and editor of over 40 books including Effective Mediation Advocacy – A Guide for Practitioners (Mediation Publishing 2016) Preparing for Mediation – A Guide for Consumers (Mediation Publishing 2015)  Mediation Advocacy (2nd edn.Nova Law & Finance 2011 with separate local editions for Hong Kong, Nigeria and India), Small Claims – A Guide to Mediation and Litigation in the County Court (with HH Judge Pearl 5th edn.Wildy, Hill & Simmonds 2010) How Judges Decide Cases: Reading, Writing and Analysing Judgments (Xpl publishing 2006),and Influencing the Judicial Mind: Effective Written Advocacy in Practice (2nd edn.Wildy’s 2012). He has written for Commercial Lawyer and appeared on Legal Network Television, Yorkshire Television, ITN News at Ten, the Discovery Channel, BBC Radio 4, Radio London, GLR and London Live, Radio Essex, Kent, Lancashire and the World Service. He has also written a number of books on late Victorian theatre and acted as a technical consultant on the Oscar-winning Mike Leigh film Topsy-Turvy and for a PBS documentary in the United States.
